Toil for Toil

The anthem promises wealth for toil. Put in the work and it pays off: a home, some security, time that is your own.

This blog starts from a suspicion that for a lot of people the deal has slipped, and the reward for work is mostly more work. We want to test that suspicion in public, with evidence, and say so when it turns out to be wrong.

  1. Work is the subject

We write about the deal between effort and reward: wages, hours, housing, tax, and the rules that connect them. Elections and parliaments matter here because that is where those rules get made.

  2. Show the working

Every claim that rests on a number links to where the number came from, so you can check it yourself. If we can't source it, we don't print it.

  3. Count hours, not just dollars

A pay rise that takes an extra shift to earn is not the same as one that doesn't. We look at what work costs people in time, not only what it pays.

  4. Give the other side its best argument

On contested questions we set out the strongest case each side would make before saying what we think. An argument that only works against a weak opponent isn't worth publishing.

  5. Correct in public

When we get something wrong, we fix it and add a dated note to the article saying what changed. Every paragraph is numbered so you can point to the exact line. Send corrections to corrections@example.com.

  6. Write for people with day jobs

Plain language, short articles, and no jargon without a definition. If an explainer needs a degree to follow, it hasn't explained anything.

That's the whole programme. Read the articles.
